Withheld Difference

A dark Flexoki plate sits inside a paper margin. Across it, one arrangement of bowed rails, leaning uprights and three hooks is printed many times, each copy shifted by only a few pixels and a fraction of a degree. The reprints pile into grey, black and orange bands that thicken where they agree.

One reprint is not in register: it is shoved up and right and inked in orange and red. A single incomplete slit cuts the plate on a diagonal from upper left toward lower right, stopping short of both edges. The slit is paper-colored, edged in red-600. That slit is the only place the copies do not match.

Nothing else is labeled. The field is the stacked motif; the tear is the withheld difference.
