Caustics

A family of long curves sweeps the whole frame along one oblique axis. Where neighbours run tangent they crowd until they overlap and fuse into a single bright run; away from it the same curves lie far apart and stay individually countable. Two branches of that run meet at one cusp, held off centre. Brightness is crowding and a discrete step, never a blur.
