The Unwinding Front

One nucleus seeds faceted growth on a dark field: hexagonal fronts advance outward, each broken by a gap that rotates ring to ring so the closed rings unwind into a spiral. The fronts are bands of hairline strokes in a warming orange ramp with one saturated red front set inside the frame, and the surrounding field is a fine stipple that thins near the fronts. The whole square is the system, growth reaching past the frame edges.
